Local foodies are buzzing this week after San Francisco Weekly's Meredith Brody reported that Chez Panisse founder and local food matriarch Alice Waters will be receiving the French Legion of Honor.
France is well known for it's exciting culinary culture (read about the Bureau du Fooding), and has played a prominent role in the global Slow Food Movement. It is significant to see an American local food proponent to be bestowed the honor. Surprisingly enough, she is not the only American chef to receive the award - the French government pinned the medal on Julia Child in 1991. So we know Alice will be in good company.
Details are still forthcoming, and a date for the ceremony has not been set, but will take place in the Bay Area.
Congratulations, Alice.
